Cutting's top 30 sires

Story and photos by John Brasseaux

Quarter Horse News, January 15th, 2000
Volume 22, No. 1

A shift in the world of cutting sires that began two years ago is continuing.

At the end of 1997, offspring earning numbers showed that Dual pep had unseated Smart Little Lena as the top cutting sire of the year. For 1998, that continued to be the case (the 1999 cutting statistics will be published in the March 15 issue of QHN). The Bar H Ranche-owned stallion barely held off Smart Little Lena by a margin of $1.96 million to $1.92 million in 1998 offspring earnings. Smart Little Lena had held the No. 1 possition from 1992 until 1996.

The remaining top five sires' position also stayed the same. Nos. 3 through 5 held steady with veterans Freckles Playboy, Peppy San Badger and Doc's Hickory occupying the same spots in '98 as they did in '97.

It looks as if Dual Pep and Smart Little Lena will continue to be close in offspring earnings once the '99 stats come out. Non-pro Jon Cates had a great year on Olenas Dually, a Dual Pep-sired mare, while Quejanapep, another Dual Pep mare, carried Greg Coalson to the Reserve Championship of the NCHA Futurity Non-Pro and was ridden by Coalson tot he Futurity Open finals last month. Throw in other Dual Pep-bred winners, like the dynamic young stallion Chual Dual, and his numbers will continue to be high.

On the other hand, there are just too many Smart Little Lena offspring winning money for him not to be newar the top of every Equi-Stat sire list. Just one indicationof how close the two horses are can be seen in the semifinals and finals of the recent NCHA Futurity. Smart Little Lena had 17 offspring in the semis and finals of the three divisions, while Dual Pep was right there with 16.

Four sires are new to the elite 30 list, beginning with Travalena. Last year, he made our "Ones to Watch" list as an up-and-coming horse and this year, he proved it, jumping from 34 to 13. Another is Mr Peponita Flo, also a "Ones to Watch" member, which vaulted from 33 to 18, hardly a surprise due to the fabulous success of Shakin Flo and Hickorys Golden Flo. However, a number of his offspring mad the finals of some West Coast futurityies in '99, so that, combined with Shankin Flo's unending skein of big-money championships, should keep him high in the '99 rankings and beyond.

One horse proving himself to be an all-round sire is Smart Chic Olena, No. 22, recently named the reining world's latest million-dollar sire. Ranked 39th in '97, he recently had two Open Futurity finalists. Smart Chic Olena has shown that he's the performance horse world's go-to guy, siring cutting, reining and reined cow horse finalists in amazing numbers.
