To excel in the reined cow horse event, a horse must possess several important qualities.
He must be "cow smart," or in other words, he must be able to "read" a cow and interpret what the cow's about to do. He must possess the athleticism to run hard, stop and turn around in order to control a cow. And, he must possess the desire, or heart, to complete the tasks that his rider asks him to do.
The reined cow horse industry's leading sire in 1998 (according to Equi-Stat, a division of Cowboy Publising Group), Smart Chic Olena, deserves to be labeled as a "uper sire" as well as a "super star."
Smart Chic Olena was bred to be a champion performer with his sire, Smart Little Lena, having won the National Cutting Horse Association's triple crown - the NCHA Futurity, Derby and Super Stakes - and his dam Gay Sugar Chic's sire being Champion performance sire, Gay Bar King. Smart Chic Olena provied himself to be a champion performer in the cutting and reining pens, having won an AQHA World Championship title in each discipline and having lifetime career earnings of $127,600. And now, with nine foal crops on the ground, a large number of his offspring have proven that they have what it takes to become cutting, reining and/or reined cow horse champion. In 1998, Smart Chic Olena's offspring credited him as the year's leading sire in both the reining and reined cow horse events.
The 20 stallions listed on the charts within this article topped the list of leading reined cow horse sires in 1998, which was publishe in the Quarter Horse New's annual Reined Cow Horse statistical issue.
