Some equine enthusiasts take only enough time from their busy day-to-day schedules to participate in or to enjoy watching their favorite discipline. Therefore, they may not realize how cloely-related the various disciplines' requisite for success really is. Three good examples of equine disciplines that require similar talents in order to succeed are cutting, reining and reined cow horse. Each requires a tremendous amount of athletic ability, structural soundness, a good nind and a lot of heart (try).
On the other hand, a number of owners and trainers have realized that breedinga tittle "cow" in their reiners just increases their prospects' opportunities to become champions in multiple events as well as increase their marketability.
A few reining sires have successfully competed in multiple events, and we're seeing more and more of these sires' offspring "cross-over" between the disiplines and record championship titles in each.
Smart Chic Olena slides to the top
The No. 1 reining sire in 1998, Smart Chic Olena, is a prime example of a multti-talented individual which has proven that he can pass his many talents on to his offspring.
Smart Chic Olena outsmarted his way tot he top of the 1998 leading sires list in not one, but TWO discilpines - reining and reined cow horses. The 1985 sorrle stallion, owned by Jim Babcock of Gainesville, Texas, proved himself an athlete, winning a AQHA world championship in two events, cutting and reining. Now he's gone a step futher with many of his offspring crediting him with earnings within the reining, reined cow horse and cuttine events.
Ninety-three of his offspring earned a total of $434,899 in reining competition during the 1998 show season. Topping the list of money-earners was his son, Chic Please, bred by MS & B Enterprises, owned by Arces Enterprise and ridden by Todd Bergen to the 1998 NRHA Open Futurity Championship and year-end earnings amounting to $123,774. A versatile athlete, Chic Please was also the 1998 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Reserve Champion and earned $68,179 in reined cow horse competition during the year for total earnings of $191,953.
Other Smart Chic Olena offspring earning over $10,000 in 1998 reining competitions, were Oaks Leo Chic ($24,206), Rowdy Rankee ($23,835), Dealin Dirty ($22,018), Spat Olena ($17,853), Chocolate Chic Olena ($17,290), Dancin Chic Olena ($15,240), Hesa Smart Chic ($14,068), and Mr Bueno Chick ($11,551).
Ranked second on the list of 1998's leading reining sires was Hollywood Dun It, which has ranked as the discipline's leading sire four times (in 1993 and 1995-97).
The 1983 stallion's leading 1998 money-earner was BH Hollywoods Lady, out of Heart By BH by Be Aech Enterprise, bred by Martin Bergman of Rottenberg, Germany, owned by Linda Hamilton of Scottsdale, Ariz., and ridden by Dell Hendricks to the 1998 HRHA Open Futurity Reserve Championship.
Hollywood Dun It's offspring earning over $10,000 during the 1998 reining season included Now Ya Dun It Doc ($29,295), The Devils Dun It ($25,194), Dun It With A twist ($18,511), Footworks Finest ($16,906), Snow White ($14,237), and Tune Miss Hollywood ($10,227).
